What is the limit of the size of parts that MIM can process?

Answer: Almost all products in MIM have a mass of less than 1kg, and there are also parts with an average mass of only 10g. The minimum mass for MIM parts is less than 0.5g. The maximum geometric dimension of the part is generally less than 200mm, and the longest dimension is about 25mm.

 

  • Three Parameters Limited:

(These Parameters actually vary with equipment and technology, but can help rationalize component design. Complexity of the component should also be taken into account. )

  • Cross-sectional Area: 

Limited by the pressure capability of the molding machine. Some can handle components up to 77cm², but very few in real production.

  • Length: 

Limited by the mold or mold base or tie bars of the molding machine. The range of quoted maximum lengths is from 50 to 1000mm, with a mean length capability of 180mm. 

The range of minimum lengths is about 0.25mm.

  • The Maximum Thickness:

Not a direct limitation, but molding and debinding cycles become very slow as thickness grows. 

Ranges from 8 to 125mm, with a mean thickness capability of 30 mm.


In general, MIM is preferable for producing parts with complex shapes and small sizes to ensure cost-effectiveness.
