During the debinding process, the binder is removed, and the part's density typically falls below 70%. The purpose of sintering is to densify the powder and eliminate most of the pores, with the density typically reaching over 95% of the theoretical density after sintering.
Therefore, during sintering, the green compact undergoes 10%–20% shrinkage, resulting in significant changes in dimensions. This can lead to issues such as warping or deformation due to uneven shrinkage caused by gravity or differences in shrinkage rates at various locations.
Due to the above factors, sintering requires strict control of temperature and time to ensure uniform, isotropic shrinkage of the part. For example, when sintering D2 tool steel, the temperature must be controlled within ±5°C. This is typically performed under protective gas or vacuum conditions.
After sintering, the parts will exhibit superior mechanical properties and can undergo further processing, such as additional densification, shaping, coating, machining, etc., to complete the entire manufacturing process.
