The draft angle is a slope designed on both sides of the mold cavity to facilitate demolding.
There is a difference between the draft angle for MIM and injection molding because MIM must address the fragility of the green part and sintering shrinkage, so a larger draft angle (1°–5°) is required; while injection molding only needs to overcome demolding friction, so a small draft angle (0.5° to 2°) is sufficient.
The draft angle should be determined based on factors such as the product's wall thickness and features.
Relationship between wall thickness and draft angle | |||
Draft angle (°) | Wall thickness (mm) | Draft angle (°) | Wall thickness (mm) |
0.00 | ≤3 | 0.75 | ≤18 |
0.25 | ≤6 | 1.0 | ≤25 |
0.50 | ≤12 | 1.5 | ≤35 |
*For small MIM parts with lower precision requirements, draft angles may not be necessary.
